Saturday Fashion Programme
The Saturday Fashion Programme was set up to raise awareness on topical issues and focused on the theme ‘Making a Statement’ to promote issues related to the environment. The aim of the course was to create an awareness of environmental issues using fashion and textiles. Global warming, recycling, trade with developing nations and ethical fashions are a few examples.
It was set up to allow young people the opportunity to learn more about catwalk fashion design as part of the Saturday Study Support Programme. The programme was targeted at young people aged 14-19 years old that live or attend school in Tower Hamlets .The programme provided support for young people wanting to learn more about fashion and textiles, provided support with coursework and exam preparation, helped to develop young people’s potential and improve grades at GCSE, BTEC and A Level standards, as well as support with portfolio preparation for foundation studies.
The course was supported by a team of professional tutors, designers and guest speakers who supported young people through the whole design, making and construction processes enabling them to gain an insight into the creative and cultural industries, while also helping young people make more informed choices about progression roots leading towards further education.
The ten-week programme enabled young people to learn about different aspects of fashion design, textile application and garment construction, including embellishment and customising techniques.
The overall aim of the programme was to equip young people with relevant skills, knowledge and understanding to construct a basic garment, such as a skirt, along with a co-ordinated top for a catwalk show.
Young people gained an accredited qualification with the Arts Awards Accreditation programme.
This project was co-ordinated in partnership with ‘A’ Team Arts.
