Peer Motivators
Tower Hamlets Summer University runs a fantastic year round Peer Motivator Volunteers Scheme for young people aged 16 - 23 years old. The scheme is open to young people from all over London and offers the opportunity to gain experience as a community volunteer. Peer Motivators are ambassadors for Summer Uni and for the young people that attend our courses.
Summer Peer Motivators
Summer Peer Motivators market the summer programme and support its delivery. Peers are supervised by a Co-ordinator and supported by Team Leaders, who are experienced Peer Motivators.
All Peer Motivators are taken through an in-depth training programme in order to equip them for the role. Training includes team work, equal opportunities, dealing with conflict, customer care, interpersonal skills, disability awareness and marketing.
Being a Summer Peer Motivator is a great opportunity to acquire work experience in the community, broaden employment capacity and make new friends. We are looking for a diverse range of young volunteers who are enthusiastic and reliable and feel they have skills that could benefit others.
Peer Motivators are key to Summer Uni being able to run our free courses; as they are the ‘face of Summer Uni’ and have the responsibility of maintaining the excellent reputation and standards Summer Uni has within Tower Hamlets and across London.
This scheme is open to young people aged 16 - 23 years old from across London. Training is free and support is provided throughout the scheme, we also reimbursed lunch and travel expenses.
If you are enthusiastic and fancy getting involved and would like to make a difference, download an application form and Task Description that will tell you more about the role on the link below. You can also speak to a member of the Peer Team for further information by calling us during office hours on 020 7247 7900.
The deadline for application forms for this years Summer Peer Motivators Scheme is 5.00pm on Friday 13th June 2008.
Accreditation
All Peer Motivators will have the opportunity to work towards an accreditation. The Summer Peer Motivator Scheme is accredited through National Open College Network (NOCN) and supported by Tower Hamlets College. Registration is optional and open to all volunteers, regardless of age. The Peer Motivator training module 'Being a Peer Youth Worker’ is at NOCN Level 2.
Training and assessment is integrated using 'Peer Handbooks'. These include all training handouts and guidelines, as well as a structured set of tasks, which are assessed at the end of the volunteering.
Peer Volunteering Opens Doors
The success of the Peer Motivator scheme has generated lots of initiatives. Peers have trained to become youth researchers, interviewing young people on education, employment, regeneration and youth issues. Some have become peer mentors and course tutors and Summer Uni staff members; facilitating community relation initiatives. Whilst community based peer teams are developing volunteering and citizenship opportunities for young people in their own neighbourhoods. Some are training as youth and community workers and many found it has helped to open doors into employment and further education.
Ashney Chawla 16, Summer Peer and Youth Advisor
"The best part of this experience for me was the opportunity to chill out with friends, and I have made lots of new friends."
Nasima Begum 17, Summer Peer
"I undertook this programme so that I could apply to be a Millennium Volunteer, and am still working towards reaching 200 hours. Many of my friends got themselves paid work, but I wanted to work with young people as I felt the experience would help me in the future."
